Sarah Bloom Raskin was born on April 15, 1961 (age 61 years) in Medford, Massachusetts, United States. She is the daughter of a Jewish family. Her mother is Arlene (née Perlis) and her father is Herbert Bloom. Bloom attended Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Illinois, where she graduated in 1979.
Raskin went on to Amherst College after graduating from high school where she graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1983, and wrote her undergraduate thesis on monetary policy. Prior to serving as commissioner, she was a managing director at the Promontory Financial Group. Raskin also served as a chief financial regulator for Maryland.
