Ulrich Hackenberg was born on May 12, 1950 (age 73 years) in Herne, Germany. He is the son of German parents. In his youth, Ulrich Hackenberg attended the private boarding school Landschulheim Schloss Heessen with the help of a gifted scholarship, where he also obtained his Abitur.
Hackenberg studied mechanical engineering in the automotive engineering department at the RWTH Aachen University, where he received his doctorate in 1984 at the Institute for Motor Vehicles.
Career
Ulrich Hackenberg began his automotive career at Audi AG and became head of the vehicle mechanics main group. In 1989 he took over the management of the concept definition and later the technical project management of the entire product range.

Hackenberg moved to Volkswagen AG in 1998. There he was in charge of body development and car concept development. In addition, he was in Technical Development at Rolls Royce Bentley Motor Cars Ltd. active, where he carried out the restructuring of the development department.
In 2002, Hackenberg returned to Audi AG, where he was, among other things, head of the concept development, body development and electrics/electronics division took over and developed the modular longitudinal matrix there.
When Martin Winterkorn became CEO of Volkswagen AG on January 1, 2007, he took Hackenberg with him to Wolfsburg, among other executives. There he became a member of the Volkswagen brand board for the Development division.
On July 1, 2013, Hackenberg became Head of Development at Audi, replacing Wolfgang Dürheimer. Hackenberg was put on leave in September 2015 due to the VW emissions scandal. In the surveys of the VW group auditing, allegations were made against him as head of development at the time and on December 3, 2015, he resigned from the Audi board.
At the end of 2016, Ulrich Hackenberg was appointed to the supervisory board of Finnish contract manufacturer Valmet Automotive.
