Werner Gegenbauer was born on May 28, 1950 (age 73 years) in Berlin, Germany. After graduating from the Marie Curie High School in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Gegenbauer did an apprenticeship in the glass and brass cleaning company founded by his father Carl Gegenbauer in Berlin, London and Switzerland in 1925.

In 1971, while he was still an apprentice, he founded his own cleaning company together with a Swiss partner, which after three years already had 500 employees. After the journeyman’s examination, Gegenbauer also passed the master’s examination in the cleaning trade.
Werner Gegenbauer joined the management of the family company in 1979. In 1982 Gegenbauer was elected chairman of the building cleaning guild, and in 1986 he took over management of the Gegenbauer group of companies, which had a second location in Stuttgart since 1950. Today he is the head of the group’s supervisory board.
Gegenbauer expanded the group of companies to include new, independent business areas and specialist companies in the field of security services as well as in facility management for the health sector and the housing industry. In 1997 he founded, among other things, the Velomax Hallenbetriebs GmbH, which operates the Berlin multifunctional halls Velodrom and Max-Schmeling-Halle.
In 2001 Salamander took over 77% of the company, two years later Werner Gegenbauer bought back a part with two business partners so that they held 51% of the voting rights. Effective January 1, 2010, a management consortium led by Werner Gegenbauer bought back the remaining 49% of EnBW ‘s shares, so the company is now 100% owned by Werner Gegenbauer and a management consortium.
In 1997 Werner Gegenbauer was elected President of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, where he remained until 2004. He is a member of the Economic Advisory Board of the State Sports Association of Berlin and was responsible for the city’s successful application for the 2009 World Championships in Athletics.
On May 2, 2006, he took over the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Hertha BSC from Rupert Scholz. On May 23, 2008, the General Assembly elected him the new President of Hertha BSC, replacing Bernd Schiphorstafter 8 years in office. On October 25, 2020, he was re-elected President of Hertha BSC with 421 votes against and only 542 votes for him. That was the worst result of his tenure.
Werner Gegenbauer resigned on May 24, 2022, as President of Hertha BSC. Gegenbauer is also treasurer of the museum association of the German Historical Museum, board member of the Friends of the Komische Oper Berlin, and chairman of the economic advisory board of the broadcaster radio B2.
